Simply put: our Sports Medicine Program produces results.
Our Philosophy
How does our program differ from other training programs or a gym? It starts with our philosophy, and our philosophy is to train the athlete using intense functional exercises with high quality mechanics. Working in the weight room is important, but it is only part of becoming a complete athlete. We focus on the most directed exercise programs that have an immediate impact on how you compete and train.
We believe that development of athletic ability depends on many trainable factors, but that many individuals are mired in outdated or less effective training approaches. Our program focuses on elements of function—specific movement patterns that have a purposeful carryover to sport. Most of our drills and training focus on moving your body from point-to-point with solid mechanics, high quality movement, and with as much speed as the athlete can handle.
Once the athlete can master the mechanics of movement, we add loading techniques to bias specific muscle groups and facilitate speed and power. Although we use weights, you won’t see many machines in our clinic because an athlete seldom sits on a machine in competition. We aren’t trying to replace the local gym or your school’s weight room, we are experts at human motion, physiology, and the neuromuscular adaptations of exercise. Our program adds to what you gain from weight work by training your body to use that strength in functional sports movements.
How does our program work? We push you hard, but we base your effort on a framework that is specific to the biomechanical and physiological requirements of your sport. A football lineman isn’t quite the same type of athlete as a volleyball setter or a soccer forward. Our program reflects those differences in workouts that will improve your ability to perform at your sport.
Programs and Services
Since the inception of Rockwood Clinic’s Performance Enhancement Programs, hundreds of our program graduates are seeing the results of our training on the field or on the court. Their competition notices the results of their training even more.
Dozens of our clients are collegiate athletes, and many of our clients have gone through our program more than once to better prepare them for the next level. We can push a junior high school athlete as hard as a professional athlete, no question.
Rockwood Clinic offers sport-specific training and conditioning for many programs. Click on the link below to learn more about what we can offer:

Staff
The staff of the Sports Performance Center has varied expertise in the fields related to human performance and includes: exercise science specialists, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, registered dietitians, primary care specialists, orthopedic surgeons, and physician assistants.
All of us are college educated in a field of sport science, but we are also experienced and hold numerous nationally recognized credentials as well. And we've been where athletes have been, as we are represented with several former NCAA Division I collegiate athletes on our staff
Facility & Equipment
We work out on an indoor synthetic grass turf with rubberized pellet infill that is as good as any football field at the NFL or NCAA level. It provides the look and feel of natural grass, plus is far safer than other indoor synthetic grasses—it is the only artificial surface approved by FIFA, soccer’s worldwide governing body.
We run on an indoor Mondo track surface—the official surface of all Olympic Track & Field Championships since 1972.
Training on unstable surfaces better prepares athletes for change of direction, lateral agility, and power. Most training centers use numerous devices for this purpose (as do we), but we went a step farther and installed an indoor sand pit (the SandTrap)—any time of year we can challenge you in ‘The Trap’.
Speed wins games, so we train with unique techniques that can’t be reproduced on the field or in the gym. Using Woodway Overspeed Treadmills with harness systems, we identify your top training speed—then expose you to graduated training levels at sequentially higher speeds that allow your neuromuscular system to adapt to the faster speed. Our techniques are proven and will make you faster.
That’s just part of our program, but there’s too much to list on a piece of paper. So come see us! We welcome visits from athletes and coaches allowing us to show you all about our other training concepts not listed above—from computerized Anaerobic Threshold testing to plyometrics to Cormax explosion training and more.
Special Programs
One of the drawbacks of many strength and conditioning programs is inflexibility for specific individuals or teams. Although any conditioning program should produce improvements, specificity is essential in maximizing the amount of improvement.
Depending on the needs of an individual or team, please call and talk to one of our staff if you are interested in something a little different than the programs listed above. We offer group discounts, but strive to keep the groups small enough to allow our staff adequate supervision of mechanics and effort. We don’t do the traditional “group class” format because those are typically just effort-driven workouts. Our small group format allows us to maintain a focus on each individual in the group. Sound mechanics and high quality movement are constantly evaluated and coached by our staff.
Let us know what would help you, your son or daughter, or your team and we will devise a plan of action to meet your needs.
