Direct access endoscopy procedures include EGD (upper endoscopy) which examines the esophagus, stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. Colonoscopy visually examines the entire colon and rectum for abnormalities, and is considered the most reliable procedure for colon cancer screening. Therapeutic procedures and biopsies can also be done at the time of these procedures.
Capsule endoscopy helps your doctor evaluate the small intestine, which cannot be reached by traditional EGD or colonoscopy. Most commonly done to evaluate the cause of anemia or bleeding from the small intestine, it utilizes a pill sized video capsule with its own lens and light source which the patient swallows.
ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, including gallstones, scars, leaks from trauma or surgery, and cancer.
