Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. This broad discipline of medicine encompasses treatment of diseases of the ears, nose and throat (ENT), to include many problems of the head and neck. For example, infections, tumors and inflammatory conditions involving the face, ears, nose, sinuses, oral cavity, speaking and swallowing passages, and soft tissues of the neck are among the conditions addressed.

Within Rockwood Clinic, the specialty of otolaryngology is represented by three generalists with wide interests, particularly in the treatment of skin cancer and conditions of the nose and sinuses. Otolarynogolists diagnose, treat and manage specialty-specific disorders as well as many primary care health conditions in both children and adults. The more common conditions are treated medically and surgically by Rockwood Clinic providers.

Conditions requiring subspecialty expertise are evaluated here, followed by coordination for subspecialty treatment by colleagues in the community or tertiary medical centers. After such subspecialty intervention, ongoing care such as surveillance for cancer recurrence is conducted here.
