The Rockwood Arthritis Center specializes in diseases of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Among the many conditions they treat are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, inflammatory back pain, tendonitis, osteoporosis, and certain autoimmune diseases such as lupus and vasculitis.
Rheumatologists may also treat soft tissue problems related to the musculoskeletal system and sports-related soft tissue disorders. The specialty is interrelated with physiotherapy, physical medicine and rehabilitation of disabled patients.
If pain in the joints, muscles or bones lasts more than six weeks, patients should be evaluated by their primary physician to see if they would benefit from a referral to see a rheumatologist. Rheumatologists often consult with other physicians to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. They work closely with patients to identify the problem and design an individualized treatment program.
Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce inflammation and relieve pain for many patients. Many rheumatoid arthritis patients are benefiting from powerful new drugs, given as infusions, which tone down the body's disease-fighting immune system that is attacking the body it is supposed to defend.
For arthritis patients with chronic pain, acupuncture offers an effective, alternative treatment. It can also help improve the functioning of the body's immune system. One of our rheumatologists is board certified in acupuncture and oriental medicine.
